what is natural vitality??
Natural Vitality is an Austin based brand that has been around since 1982 when the Natural Calm product was formulated. Today, years later, Natural Vitality develops supplements with the intention of using the best ingredients. They seek out organic, plant based ingredients as much as possible, which I LOVE. all fruits and veggies included in their products are organically grown as well as flavorings stevia and agave.
their Natural Calm product is meant to reduce stress through balancing the calcium and magnesium levels in our bodies. I learned that calcium is what allows muscles to contract, while magnesium allows them to relax. a cellular interaction between calcium and magnesium occurs with every breath we take!
I really liked how Natural Vitality describes it as an On/Off switch on their site… it reads…
“when we are under stress, our cells—which in their resting state contain magnesium—go through a change. calcium, normally outside the cells, enters the cells and the calcium level becomes high. This is the action state in which a muscle cell, for example, will contract and tense the muscle. The magnesium then pushes the calcium out of the cell and the cell is again in its resting, relaxed state. Think of it as an on-off switch. The “off” is magnesium and the “on” is calcium.” – Natural Vitality
Natural Vitality describes the process completely here. there is no denying the intricate and truly amazing workings of our bodies, and because i don’t have scientific knowledge, I appreciate trusted and reputable brands like Natural Vitality that are able to make the information simple for an everyday consumer.
as someone who has experienced horrible anxiety at different points in my life, I’m always interested in finding more relaxation and management of moods through my diet and lifestyle, NATURALLY.
wait, so I’m stressed because I’m deficient in magnesium??
well, don’t consider low levels of magnesium the ONLY reason for stress (obviously), but it certainly may be playing a role. why not try a supplement of magnesium to see if anxiety, stress, and insomnia start to lessen?
how do I get more magnesium?
natural vitality has made it quite simple. simply stir into ice water for a slightly sweet, almost effervescent taste. start with 1 teaspoon, and gradually work up to 2 teaspoons of Calm. reduce amount if it disrupts your tummy. (sometimes too much magnesium can cause GI symptoms).
great! but that’s kind of…blah. any fun recipes to incorporate this stuff?
oh, I’m so glad you asked! I made CHILL OUT popsicles incorporating the CALM raspberry lemon flavor.
other ideas to use the CALM powder from Natural Vitality are to add it to baking, sprinkle in smoothies, or stir in chia puddings. you can order the regular flavor which is a bit more versatile here.
but I loved the raspberry lemon flavor for this summer-y dessert.
this dessert is…
free of refined sugars.
full of healthy fats.
CALMING and STRESS REDUCING
easily customized/improvised with different fruits.
just need your blender and a popsicle mold. it’s super easy- and STRESS FREE. wouldn’t want to defeat the purpose with a complicated recipe. if you haven’t gotten a popsicle mold for the summer yet- try this one from Zoku. I love it! here’s how you make these pops.
- 1/4 cup of agave, maple syrup, honey, or liquid stevia (I prefer agave)
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 12 oz. of lite coconut milk (can sub almond or soy milk- but will be less creamy)
- 1 cup raspberries
- 1/2 cup water
- 3-4** tsp. Natural Vitality Calm in Raspberry Lemon
- 1. in a small bowl, pour in coconut milk, sweetener of choice, and vanilla. whisk well.
- pour into popsicle molds, fill 3/4 of the way.
- 2. next, set in freezer and allow to begin freezing for about 30-45 minutes.
- 3. after 30-40 minutes, blend water, raspberries and natural vitality calm powder until well combined.
- 4. pour over the slightly frozen coconut milk mixture, until all molds are filled.
- 5. place back in the freezer and allow to freeze completely, about 4-6 hours.
- remove from freezer a few minutes prior to enjoying to thaw, then cool off and RELAX.
- ** Natural Vitality suggests starting with 1 teaspoon and gradually building up to 2 teaspoon of Calm powder. for the purpose of this recipe I suggest using 3-4 teaspoons depending on tolerance/preference to make the 6 servings.
